Serial Experiments Lain (1998), directed by Ryutaro Nakamura: In this 13-episode anime, middle-schooler Lain Iwakura is introduced to the Wired, an internet platform. She eventually cannot tell the difference between reality and virtual reality and her spirituality split.

Ghost in the Shell (1995), directed by Mamoru Oshii: Set in the post-cyberpunk future, cybernetics can replace a whole body, including the brain. Assault-team leader and full-body cyborg Motoko Kusanagi struggles to identity her soul while tracking a puppeteer who is hacking others’ cyberbrains.

The Matrix (1999), directed by the Wachowskis: Computer programmer and hacker Thomas “Neo” Anderson is the chosen one with the burden to break free from his computer-simulated reality and free humanity from intelligent machines.

Blade Runner (1982), directed by Ridley Scott: Former police officer Rick Deckard is a blade runner, a hunter of recently sentient androids. He takes on a case to kill four and begins to question humanity.

Altered Carbon (2018), created by Laeta Kalogridis: Set in the future, people can digitize their consciousness and take on new bodies. Takeshi Kovacs is downloaded onto a new body and must solve a murder to live again.
